2024-09-10 - Recent Improvements and Fixes

Last month, many updates were made to the site, and several problems were fixed.
  • Most of the PNG images have been replaced with GIF images to reduce the page load time. It now takes around 16 seconds to load the main page on a 56k internet connection, and it loads much faster on Internet Explorer or RetroZilla due to the theme being used.
  • A problem was fixed where it was not possible to download certain files using Internet Explorer 3 and 4 due to long URLs. Keep in mind, if you're using Internet Explorer on Windows 3.1, you may get a message asking you to accept a cookie. This is because the location of the downloadable files requires a cookie, and if you don’t accept it, the downloads won’t work.
  • A problem was fixed where the slider plugin would not install on Internet Explorer 3 due to missing ActiveX object files.
  • It is now possible to search using abbreviations like COD = Call of Duty or GTA = Grand Theft Auto. However, not all game abbreviations are included yet.
Other news this month:
  • Matrox Millenium and Gravis UltraSound drivers have been added.
  • New games have been added, including Earth 2140, MDK, Flanker 2.0, Shattered Steel, and a few more.
  • Video for Windows has been added to the software section.
I hope you like the changes I’ve made to the site.

2024-07-30 - Summer update

I hope you're enjoying the summer and having nice weather at your place.

The image slider on the Details page now also works on Internet Explorer 3, instead of using Javascript it uses ActiveX only on that specific browser, there is no way to get it working on Javascript due to how old the browser is.
If you dont like using ActiveX you can disable it by the "Options" -> "Security" section, by disabling it it only wil show one random image of the selected item, If you dont disable it and dont want to load it, you wil see no image.

Ive also made some simple wallpapers that are available to put on your old computer.
Those are wallpapers are made with one color tint with 8 to 16 colors to give it an old look.

Other updates that have been made:
  • New games has been added, such as the Spec Ops series, S.T.A.L.K.E.R series, Interstate '82 and more.
  • Excel 7.1 viewer, Word 7.1 viewer and PowerPoint 7.1 viewer and CPUKiller has been added to the Software section.
I hope you like the changes i made to the site.
Have a wonderful summer holiday!

2024-06-11 - Updated guestbook design

For the past two months, I have been designing an alternative guestbook to match the style of the site instead of using someone else's guestbook.
The reasons why I decided to create my own guestbook are:
  • The previous guestbook had a security flaw where you could access the .txt file and see someone else's email. I solved this issue a long time ago by encrypting the personal info inside the .txt file and moving the file to a location other than the public_html directory.
  • I wanted a guestbook that is viewable on older browsers such as Internet Explorer 3 and 4. In the past it was viewable on old browsers like Internet Explorer 5 and higher, as well as RetroZilla.
  • I also wanted to integrate it into the database instead of using separate .txt files.
Previously, an email was required to sign the guestbook; this is no longer necessary.
I have also added some "Web games" that are only playable on "Internet Explorer", You will only see that category when viewing the site with that browser.

Other updates that have been made:
  • The Captcha refresh button is back under Internet Explorer. I thought the button was broken, so I had removed it on that browser.
  • Fixed the design on "Internet Explorer" where the "Filter" and "Clear-Filter" buttons were vertically far apart from each other.
  • Emulators have been added to Software including BGB, Genecyst, NESticle, and ZSNES.
  • New games have been added, such as Anno 1602, SWAT 3, WWII GI, Frogger, Microsoft Arcade, and more.
  • "Find The Spy" has been added to Java in "Web games."
I hope you like the changes i made to the site.

2024-04-25 - Internet Explorer 3 compatible

Today I got some fun news for people who like to use Windows 3.1 or Internet Explorer 3. It is possible to use Internet Explorer 3 and higher to visit WinRetro. Almost all features are there except a few like:
  • Viewing and signing the guestbook;
  • Playing flash and JavaScript games;
  • Watching trailers or commercials of selected items.
Because Internet Explorer 3 is also compatible with Windows 3.1, you can also use that operating system to visit the site. Keep in mind that Online Patcher is hidden in compatible games. This is due to the fact that the games are designed for Windows 9x, despite the fact that it supports ActiveX.

Other news this month:
  • New games have been added such as Need for Speed I and II, MegaRace 2, Microsoft Golf, and a few more;
  • MicroHelp Zip has been added to the software;
  • AdLib Gold has been added to the drivers.
I hope you like the changes, relive old memories, and immerse yourself in the charm of retro computing.

2024-03-29 - Demos added

Game demos have been added to the site. You can choose from demos like Command & Conquer, Age of Empires, Close Combat and a few more.
You may wonder, "Why add demos to the site when I can download the full game for some games from sites like My Abandonware", there are a few reasons for it:
  • Some demos may have exclusive content that is only in the demo and not in the full game;
  • Demos are small in size and give you a preview of a game before you decide to download the full game;
  • Sharing full versions of old games is not something I'm comfortable with doing, mostly because if a game is still available for purchase for example at Steam, GOG etc. Distributing the game is illegal.
More demos may be added in the future.
Other things that have been done to this site:
  • New games have been added like Tropico 1 and 2, Myth series, Project Eden, The Matrix: Path of Neo, Enter the Matrix and a few more;
  • New software have been added like Windows 3.1 to Windows Me and Microsoft Plus;
  • Web design has been updated where you now can view all games and optionally filter them instead of choosing a category first before selecting a game.
I hope you like the changes. Next month there may be fewer things added because I'm on holiday and I'm mostly filling my belly with pizza, pasta and spaghetti.

2024-03-01 - Microsoft IIS 4 web installer restored

Today i got two good news to share with you.

The Microsoft IIS 4 web installer has been restored and its now possible to download the necessary files needed instead of downloading the full setup. This works on both Windows 95 and NT 4.0. If you don't like using a web installer there is also a full installer available to download.

Ive made a little change to the "WinRetro Downloader", its now possible to download 7zip and Internet Explorer 5.5 through the application, keep in mind that if you select Internet Explorer 5.5 it download the web installer and not the full setup.

Other things that have been done:
  • A few new drivers has been added like: ATI Mach 64, Voodoo Rush and Velocity 100/200, Diamond Stealth III, Yamaha Audician 32 plus and the Sony MSAC-FD2M.
  • New games has been added like Simcity 3000, Flatout 2, Iron Storm, Phantasmagoria series and a few more.
  • Microsoft IIS has been added to the software catagorie.
In the future i may add demos of games to this but if i start with it, i start then only with games from 1992 to 2001 bicouse of the filesize.

I hope you like the new things ive added.

2024-02-04 - IE 4 for Windows 3.1 web installer restored

For people who use Windows 3.1 for nostalgia or bringing back memories i have good news.
A few weeks ago i got the web installer for Internet Explorer 4 on Windows 3.1 working.
The downloading files and installing them works fine, the only downside is that the uninstaller after installing does not work and i dont have currently a solutions for it to make it work.

Other things that have been done last month:
  • Fixed a problem on the web installer for IE 4 and 5 where if user does not have Internet Explorer or have Internet Explorer lower that 3 installed it does not work;
  • New Softwares has been added like: 3DMark, PCmark, MusicMatch Jukebox and few more;
  • New Games have been added like: AquaNox, Indycar Racing, Traffic Giant, Transport Giant.

2024-01-02 - First post in the new year

First I want to say happy new year to you all.
I hope you had a nice New Year's Eve experience with your family and/or friends, i'm sure I have.

Things that has been done last month:
  • Internet Explorer 5.5 web installer has been fixed and should now work without any problem;
  • A few new Java and Flash games has been added to the "Web games" page;
  • New stuf has been added to the site like "OpenOffice", "Blender", "FileZilla", "Audacity" and a few SyQuest drivers;
  • A few filepaths where incorect and users cannot download the file, this has now been fixed;
  • I notice a few days ago that the design of the site was messed up, it has been fixed now but if you still notice that the design of the site is messed up try delete the browsers cache. Most of the times that wil fix the design.
For the next few months I will add more new content to the site so you dont need to search everywhere for the specific file.
